Here’s an interesting observation: If you ask around on what is the definition of ‘Accounting’, ‘Finance’, ‘Sales’, ‘Physician’, ‘Physicist’, ‘Psychic’, you probably get unanimous answer for each of them; but if you ask them “What is Marketing?”, all holes break loose.
Here are ten decent definitions of what Marketing is.
Urban legend has it that if you sacrifice your career in search of the sacred definition of marketing you will receive 72 of them in your retirement days (no, you don’t need to open the link. It’s rubbish).
You realize that the more definitions we have, the more obscure it gets.
If we cannot agree on what Marketing is, it will be very hard for us to grow professionally in that field.
So what is Marketing?
For a start, Marketing is not advertising. Advertising is just a piece in the Marketing universe.
Marketing is not about cheating people. Marketing involves a lot of psychology and persuasion, but cheating is never a part of Marketing. Scamarketing perhaps.
And most important, Marketing is not Sales. It facilitates the process of selling, but it is not selling as such.
So.. what is Marketing?
Do you see how hard it is to answer this question, and why so many people failed at it? My second personal favorite definition is an adaptation from Kotler’s, the father of Marketing: “Marketing is ‘the science and art of exploring, creating, communicating, and delivering value to satisfy the needs of a target market, at a profit.’” Simple, yet comprehensive.
Just as Kotler takes Marketing as part science, I also adopt Einstein’s idea: “If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." and I arrive at my number one favorite definition: “Marketing is ‘the process of monetizing the market.’”
Thinking of what service that you can get paid? You are doing part of marketing.
Testing your prototypes to potential users? You are doing part of marketing.
Setting up website and social media channels to promote your product? You are doing part of marketing.
Gathering post-delivery customer satisfaction survey? You are doing part of marketing.
Simply put: if you do not make money, you fail at marketing, and you fail at your business. That is why Marketing needs to be at the heart of your business.
